My First 5K Run

by Linda
(Illinois)

For years, every New Year's Resolution was to try to loose weight - again. Then last year in 2009, I decided that I will just try to run on the treadmill to get 'healthy' again. After 20 seconds, running at 5 mph, I was gasping for air! I thought this is never going to work out but I have to keep trying. Then I made it to a quarter mile without stopping. Weeks later, it was a half mile. Progress was on my side. Good thing I resolved it was to be healthy because I saw minimal weight lose. I finally made the attempt to run outside in the elements, and what a difference it was. A mile without stopping was in my reach. I sign up for a 5K and my goal is to finish. Period. Nothing flashy. I give myself a realistic time to make of 35 min. Well, I finished it in 34:11 and had the very best time! A goal made and obtained. I am 51 and my new goal is to complete a 10K before the year is up. I know I can do it. Oh, I did say good-bye to 20 lbs. too!
